PCR’s Film Newsletter – April: Week 2

Welcome back to PCR’s Film Newsletter! This week sees the return of South-Korea’s Bong Joon-Ho, the world premiere of Donald Glover & Rihanna’s Guava Island, and many more! Without further ado let’s dive into the latest developments in film during week two of April (8th-12th).


“Guava Island” to Premiere at Coachella

Cancel your Saturday plans everybody! The hotly anticipated film starring Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, Rihanna, and Letitia Wright is finally confirmed to have its world premiere during Youtube’s livestream of Coachella’s first weekend. First reported as a rumour from various news outlets such as Vulture and Pitchfork, Glover took to Twitter to confirm that he will indeed be showing Guava Island tomorrow (for free!) after his performance.

The music-focused, hour-long film will also be available on Amazon Prime for free for 18 hours beginning at 12:01 A.M. P.T. on Saturday. It will also stream on Amazon’s Twitch platform, once at 5 P.M. P.T. on Saturday, while simultaneously being live-streamed on Coachella’s YouTube Channel.


“Wreck-It Ralph” Director Rich Moore Leaves Disney for Sony Pictures Animation

Rich Moore, the Oscar-winning director behind Disney’s animated hits Zootopia, Wreck It-Ralph, and Ralph Breaks the Internet has joined SPA (Sony Picture Animations). This comes fresh off SPA’s major Oscar win for the game-changing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Moore will be developing, producing and directing original animated features for SPA, and will “also be be available to act in an advisory capacity with ongoing feature film and series-based projects.”


“Okja” Director Returns with Bloody Family-Drama “Parasite”

Legendary South-Korean Director Bong Joon-Ho returns with his latest feature Parasite. The film follows Ki Taek and his unemployed family who become entangled in an unexpected incident after their oldest son Ki Woo enters the house of Park. Watch the trailer for it below, along with the first official poster!


Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes Added to “The Menu”!

Oscar-winner Emma Stone and Oscar-nominated Ralph Fiennes have joined the cast of Alexander Payne’s Horror-Comedy The Menu. The film’s plot is said to be focusing on “an eccentric culinary event that is set to take place on an exclusive island in which a ticket to attend is worth killing over”.

 

Fiennes will play the world-renowned chef who develops the entire event, and has added a few secret (and potentially killer!) ingredients to his menu. Stone is rumoured to be playing one half of an A-list couple in attendance of the event.


Meet “The Addams Family” in Brand-New Kooky Trailer

The trailer for the brand new animated version of The Addams Family has arrived! With a voice cast comprised of Charlize Theron (Morticia Addams), Chloë Grace Moretz (Wednesday Addams), Oscar Isaac (Gomez Addams), Finn Wolfhard (Pugsley Addams), Nick Kroll (Uncle Fester), and Bette Midler (Grandma), getting reacquainted with this quirky, ghoulish family should be a delight.


“The Photograph” Snaps Up Release Date

 

Love is in the air for Universal Pictures as they’ve set a release date of Feb 14, 2020 for Stella Meghie’s romantic drama The Photograph. The film stars two-time Golden Globe nominee Issa Rae and Gotham Award nominee Lakeith Stanfield, with the premise of the film focusing on “a series of intertwining love stories set in the past and present.”


“The Lion King” Roars in Brand-New Trailer

Jon Favreau’s CGI re-imagining of the 1992 Disney animated classic The Lion King unleashes a new trailer into the wild! With a voice cast comprised of Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earl Jones, Alfre Woodard, and many, many more, it’s hard not to be extremely excited for this film! “Black Widow” Casts “The Handmaid’s Tale” Actor

Last week we reported that Marvel Studios had brought David K. Harbour on-board for Black Widow, with Rachel Weisz currently in talks to join also. This week sees the Marvel flick scoop up another high-profile actor in the form of O-T Fagbenle, well known for his role in Hulu’s award-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale! Spooky Conjuring-verse Announcements

It looks like a sequel for global horror hit The Nun will be the next film in the franchise after The Curse of La Llorona, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Conjuring 3. This is what Conjuring-verse Producer Peter Safran had to say about a potential sequel:

“I think there is an inevitability to another Nun movie. We have a really fun storyline for that teed up, so I think that that’s the next one that will be written.”


Star Wars: Episode IX Title Revealed!

Yup, you read that right, the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy is officially titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker! Along with dropping the title at Star Wars Celebration today, J.J. Abrams also unveiled a brand new first look teaser trailer!
