Welcome back to PCR’s Newsletter! This week sees us enter a new month, and with that comes fresh developments in film. Read on to find out everything happening in the first week of May!


Untitled Fantastic Beasts 3 Sequel Conjures Up New Release Date

According to Variety, the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series is now scheduled to open on November 12, 2021. Production on the third film is expected to begin in spring 2020.


Casting News: Nicholas Hoult Joins Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead Thriller

BAFTA award nominee Nicholas Hoult has been hired for Taylor Sheridan’s new film Those Who Wish Me Dead, a thriller adapted from Michael Koryta’s novel of the same name. He joins a cast so far comprised of Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, Jon Bernthal, Aiden Gillen, Medina Senghore, Finn Little, and Jake Weber.

According to DEADLINE, the film is described as “a hardcore chase thriller set against a wildfire in the Montana wilderness”. The plot follows a teenage boy (Finn Little) who, after witnessing a violent murder, is placed under a federal protection program which involves teaching him survival skills. The killers (Hoult and Gillen) involved in the aforementioned brutal murder begin to hunt down the boy, and thus we have a movie!


Trailer: ‘Gator Thriller Crawl

Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have EyesMirrorsPiranha 3D) returns with another horror film, titled Crawl. The trailer which you can watch below guarantees the film will be incredibly tense, with the plot revolving around a woman who’s trapped inside a flooded house with alligators during a Category 5 hurricane.


Casting News: David Dastmalchain Boards The Suicide Squad

James Gunn’s star-studded cast for The Suicide Squad seems to be growing by the day, with the latest addition being David Dastmalchain, who has been in some of the biggest and best blockbusters of the 21st century (The Dark KnightBlade Runner 2049).

Dastmalchain will be playing a villain by the name of the Polka-Dot Man! He’ll be joining Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Idris Elba, John Cena, and newcomer Daniela Melchior, with shooting set to begin this fall. The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theatres on August 6, 2021.


Behind the Scenes on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Marketing is ramping up for Lionsgate’s third John Wick film, with the studio releasing an official BTS titled “Art of Action” which you can watch below! 

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (please shorten the title Lionsgate!) boasts an incredible star-studded cast consisting of Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Saïd Taghmaoui, Jerome Flynn, Jason Mantzoukas, Tobias Segal, Boban Marjanovic, with Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane. The film arrives in theatres May 17, 2019.


Regina King Signs First-Look Deal with Netflix!

Academy award winner Regina King has signed a multi-year first look deal with Netflix under her production company Royal Ties! The uber talented director/producer/actress will be producing films and series for Netflix, with her sister Reina King serving as head of production for Royal Ties. 

This comes hot off the news as it was announced last week that Netflix had inked a three-project deal with global icon Beyoncé Knowles, worth a reported $60 million. Netflix has built up quite the reputation for investing in, and boosting the voices of people of colour, with the streaming giant shelling out $150 million to pry TV extraordinaire Shonda Rhimes from the clasps of ABC.


Universal Pictures Wins Rights for Sci-Fi Comedy From Team Behind Little Monsters

Universal Pictures has won a bid for a sci-fi comedy from Abe Forsythe and Lupita Nyong’o, the duo behind Little Monsters, the zombie comedy that ignited Sundance ’19. The untitled project has been described by several sources over at DEADLINE as “Men in Black meets Miss Congeniality”.


Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood to Compete at Cannes Film Festival!

Quentin Tarantino’s hotly anticipated film Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood will indeed be having it’s world premiere at Cannes Film Festival this year after all. Previously thought to not be on the lineup due to the film still being in post-production, artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced yesterday that it will indeed be competing at Cannes this year!


That just about wraps up all the major film news for the week, we definitely didn’t purposefully miss out any trailers pertaining to a blue hedgehog…
