Last week, we celebrated the movies that have the ability to creep inside our minds. Check out our watchlist for Psychological Horror Movies.
We’re continuing our Halloween countdown this week with the entities that are capable of haunting us in our nightmares. It’s Paranormal week! Whether it’s being frightened by ghosts or terrorized by devil-like figures, we at PCR can’t help but love to be afraid of these beings. So without further ado, here are our paranormal horror films of the week:
15. The Witch (2015, Robert Eggers)
“Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?”
THE WITCH comes from the mind of Robert Eggers and is a masterclass in mise-en-scené. The story follows a family in the 1600’s whose daily routine begins to unravel and tear at the seams once their newborn son mysteriously vanishes. This is the perfect horror flick to watch during Halloween month as the film is filled with the occult, witchcraft, & lurking shadows; and it all concludes with a fantastic third act finale.
16. Carrie (1976, Brian DePalma)
“He’s gonna laugh at you. They’re all gonna laugh at you”
A brutal look into the cruelty of high schoolers, DePalma’s supernatural classic CARRIE reminds us that bullying is terrifying. Often bloody as much as it is supernatural, this fascinating story has the ability to terrify its audience, making it one of PCRs favorite supernatural films of all time.
17. Annabelle: Creation (2017, David Sandberg)
“Sister, you always say that we can’t see God, we can feel his presence. In this house I feel a different kind of presence, an evil one. It’s coming after me, because I know who he is.”
ANNABELLE: CREATION is the sequel to the disappointing ANNABELLE, which follows the famous doll right to the roots of its “creation.” The better of the two Annabelle films, the paranormal is incredibly exciting and potent throughout the film, as Sandberg’s excellent direction is beneficial to crafting some of the film’s spookiest scenes!
18. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016, André Øvredal)
“You can’t kill someone this way without leaving a trace on the outside. She doesn’t even have a broken nail.”
After a mysterious homicide victim arrives on the bench of father & son coroners, the two begin to experience bizarre and paranormal occurrences that lead to frightening scenes. Øvredal’s AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE is a clever, suspenseful and fun ride that is sure to have the audience guessing (and jumping) until the end. And that’s why it’s one of our favorite movies to watch during our Halloween countdown!
19. Mama (2013, Andrés Muschietti)
“A ghost is an emotion bent out of shape, condemned to repeat itself, time and time again until it rights the wrong that was done.”
MAMA is Andy Muschietti’s directorial debut, and it’s a heartfelt story of two children who have a guardian “entity” shielding them from the outside world. The themes of motherhood and the extent to which one would go to protect one’s children is prevalent throughout MAMA, leading to the film’s strongest elements: the scares.
20. Poltergeist (1982, Tobe Hooper)
“Now clear your minds. It knows what scares you. It has from the very beginning. Don’t give it any help, it knows too much already”
There’s nothing like a classic ghost story, and Hooper’s POLTERGEIST is one that we at PCR love. Full of visually horrifying scenes, the film takes us on a journey as ghosts haunt and terrorize the Freeling family. To make matters worst for the family, the ghosts plan to kidnap the youngest child, providing a series of scares that make for a thrilling watching experience.
21. The Exorcist (1973, William Friedkin)
“What an excellent day for an exorcism.”
Considered to be one of the scariest films of all time, Friedkin’s THE EXORCIST is both beautiful and frightening. The story is classic 1970s horror as it dedicates a lot of its story to the characters, which makes the audience invest even more. The film has led to an influx of exorcism movies, none of which were able to match the magic of this horror classic. Thus, we celebrate this film during our Halloween Countdown!
