Countdown to Halloween: Gore Movie Watchlist

Last week, we celebrated the entities, ghosts and devil-like figures that are capable of haunting us in our nightmares. Check out our watchlist for paranormal movies.

This week, we’re celebrating the glory of blood and guts! From the classic slasher villains to the flesh-eating zombies, and everything in between, this is a category that we love. It’s GORE week! PCR is celebrating the scenes that make us squirm, our arm hairs rise, our stomachs churn, and our bodies shiver. So without further ado, here are our picks for our Gore Movie Watchlist:

22 – Raw (2017, Julia Ducournau)

Garance Marillier in Grave (2016)

Quicky ate my finger”

A masterpiece of horror as much as it is a coming-of-age story, Julia Ducournau’s RAW is one of those films that you can’t help but to keep watching despite its disturbing content. The film features some gruesome scenes that border on the verge of bold & artistic cannibalism and insanity, which only contributes to the intriguing and captivating nature of the film as a whole. And it’s the perfect watch during our Halloween Countdown!

23 – Green Room (2016, Jeremy Saulnier)

Now Gentlemen and Ladies. Whatever you saw or did is no longer my concern. But let’s be clear… this won’t end well.”

Blood, guts and terrifying Nazis – What more can one ask for from a horror film? Saulnier’s GREEN ROOM is everything a horror film should be: suspenseful, scary and sometimes violent. Its inclusion of bloody stabbings and human dissection only elevate the watching experience from one that’ll make you jump to one that can make your stomach churn, which is exactly why it’s one of our favorite horror films of all time.

24 – Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi)

Ellen Sandweiss in The Evil Dead (1981)

You will die! Like the others before you, one by one, we will take you.”

Sam Raimi’s cult classic THE EVIL DEAD is both unnerving and gutsy (pun intended). His direction is one that has become one of the benchmarks for horror films because of its particular style with graphic violence and relentless carnage. Raimi’s achievements with this film have paved the way for a variety of “cabin in the woods” and “rise of the dead” films, making it a classic in every right and one of PCR’s favorites.

25 – Terrifier (2018, Damien Leone)

Michael Leavy in Terrifier (2017)

What do you want from me?”

Equally horrifying and bloody, Leone’s TERRIFIER is one that is sure to make audiences squirm. The film takes a page from 1990s horror, which is one of its strengths. Pairing that with the unforgettable imagery of sawing bodies in half to biting flesh, this is a recipe for classic gore. There’s nothing like the thrill of bloody kills, and TERRIFIER has it all, which is why we at PCR love it!

26 – Saw VI (2009, Kevin Greutert)

Peter Outerbridge in Saw VI (2009)

The Jigsaw Killer may be dead, but the murders still continue”

The sixth installment of the franchise, SAW VI is all guts and gore. Greutert capitalizes on factors that make these films special and features some great death traps, one of which includes the iconic carousel scene. For most audiences, these films are nothing more than torture porn, but it’s precisely why we’re celebrating it during gore week!

27 – Martyrs (2008, Pascal Laugier)

Martyrs (2008)
Martyrs are exceptional people. They survive pain, they survive total deprivation… They transcend themselves… they are transfigured”

In 2008, Laugier’s MARTYRS graced the big screen. Packed with disturbing imagery, torture and violent bloodshed, the film is one of the goriest on our list. The heinous acts throughout paired with the trauma endured by its characters are sure to make audiences uncomfortable. For these reasons and more, it has found its way on our gore list as we count down to Halloween!

28 – Cabin Fever (2002, Eli Roth)

I don’t want any of us getting sick, but you two fuckin’ fuckers insist on touching her. Now she’s bleeding all over both you guys!”

Eli Roth’s directorial debut, CABIN FEVER, is one that’s capable of making anyone uneasy. The film centers around a group of college friends whose vacation goes horribly wrong once a flesh-eating disease slowly begins to pick them off one-by-one. Featuring some intensely disturbing scenes, this gory film is one of our favorite films to rewatch around Halloween!
